People are aghast when mothers nurse their babies and young children in public.

Instead of teaching our children through real-world experiences which would help them to develop self-control and knowledge about how to navigate the world around them, as a society, we promote the cloistering of children, and then we wonder why so many haven't learned to behave properly or haven't mastered critical thinking skills.

I mean really? I write about it but sometimes it's so upsetting I am rendered incoherant and thus mute. I wish it didn't bother me so much.

Thanks for your post.kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08183686721305419157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8537804131900093649.post-22292249715308818212010-08-12T21:19:12.481-04:002010-08-12T21:19:12.481-04:00Great article! Heck, I had friends who were in the Chicago Ballet in their teens and would ride the Metra into downtown for rehearsals several nights a week and back home late night...all alone! I was in a band that played in bars when I was 16! Gasp!

But anyway, I think the more we infantilize kids well into an age range that consideres them adults in most cultures (well, even our own until pretty recently on the evolutionary timeline), while at the same time media and society supports the early sexualization of them while simultaneously robbing them of any responsibility, trust and respect...well, to hell in a hand basket seems to apply. Not a huge surprise, then.

As always, you articulate so well what so many of us think. My kids are young, but I can only imagine the challenges they will face in the future if things continue to go this way. I hate to think that rural life is the only place where kids will be given freedoms and responsibility - when suburban society seems to have been created solely for the entertainment and consumerism of kids. I posted something on my blog...So true! *applause*

I posted something on my blog about adults complaining about spending time with their children in school holidays, and in some ways this post reminds me of my own. We can not claim to have come that far from the days of "seen and not heard" with these attitudes running rampant.Alice and Motherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06342365954489802456noreply@blogger.com
