Signs

For those who may feel despair regarding the recent snow fall, here are some hopeful signs of spring for you, as observed in our yard this morning:

The robins, who overwintered with us, have nearly stripped all of the remaining fruit from our trees.

The English sparrows have reclaimed their nesting boxes (we have four) and are indeed stuffing the boxes full of twigs and bits, and will bless us with the chirps of hungry babies by mid-May or so.

I see the snow, of course, (all 12" of it) but lately I'm noticing the brilliant blue sky, the clear, bright sunshine, the return or birdsong. The Quickening is truly here, take heart.

  1. Dear Amy, ok, I'm a sucker for anything with the tag Maine, but I love your blog for a lot more reasons. It is creative, filled with wonder, joy, emotion, and now I see that you're reading my book Roots Shoots Buckets & Boots, which was mostly painted and written in South Bristol, Maine where we spend our happiest times.

Keep up your great creativity and family values.

  2. Dear Sharon, (!!!!!!)

I'm so honored to have you read, let alone comment here, thank you so very much. Truly, I've been a reader and follower of your work for many years now, and I treasure not only Roots Shoots Buckets & Boots and your other books, but the articles you've written, like the one about rosa rugosa (I forget if that was for Country Home or Country Living?--I have it somewhere...). We have a long stretch of rosa rugosa and I think about you everytime I admire their beauty. About this time every year I get out all the beloved gardening books, yours among them, of course. Again, I'm so thrilled to read your kind and generous note. Thanks ever so much.

    Happy Gardening,
    Amy
