On Not Hurrying: Yuletide : Day Eleven

Yule morning

stockings

New and old cards. Some of those cards date to 1860. #yule #yuletide

early morning

We've just opened stockings in the kitchen where Alex's Yule bread is rising.

Smss Smss Smss! #yule #yuletide

Today started out both early and gray. We had our usual chores of feeding the chickens and ducks, guinea pigs and cats, and Alex started his Yule bread dough rising. We woke to some the mildest weather in weeks, and it's been so gray this entire month, so we were looking forward to the sun that was meant to show up in the afternoon. The kettle boiled and three of us sat to have cups of dark tea while carols played, and one of us slept in just a bit longer. Soon, all of us were together, eggs were scrambled, more tea was poured, and someone said we should do stockings. Oh, yes, of course, stockings! Then we sat at the kitchen table, opening our stocking gifts and drinking more tea, and we loved one another. Alex checked his dough, punched it down, and some of us went to brush teeth and properly dress for the day. Not one of us hurried.

The not hurrying turns out to be our favorite part of Yule and Santa Day in particular. There's no need to end the day by 9am, and we all relish the postponement of opening the gifts, wrapped so charmingly. The anticipation is sweet, and we wanted to savor it. Late morning, however, we all made our way to our tree, settled into our seats, and passed each other gifts. Olivia, as she did last year, had made us all something personal; hand-knit cowls for Alex and Adam in colors that bring out their eyes, and a darling felted portrait pin of a Speckled Sussex hen for me. For the family, to go with our felt Beatrice and Annabelle ornaments she made last year, she gave us a Claudia. Now we have a trio of guinea pigs to hang on our tree. Adam made us laugh with his attempts at reading German in the booklet that came with his new wood carving set. Olivia was so pleased with her wireless speaker, music lover that she is. Alex received his usual mixture of geekery and the practical, and this year it was Terry Pratchett and chainsaw gear. And then there was me, also as usual (I think my husband delights in finding the gift that will make me cry), sobbing over the gorgeous hand painted box with the soft sculpture Santa and Reindeer inside, made by our friend, Phoebe Wahl, and even more sobbing when Alex read her note, aloud. I adore her art and even more, the way she captures the magic that I so love about Yuletide in her so many of her works. These pieces will forever be a whimsical and charming part of our Yuletide tradition.

huge surprise from Alex

By noon, the sun was streaming in and we were down to the last box, which was long and narrow and leaned against the wall. It was for both Adam and Olivia.

We gave the kids cross-country skis, knowing they will be put to good use here on the farm. Of course, we will need snow. This day has turned bright and sunny, and oh so green, outside. Since we had quite a bit of snow in November, we weren't very disappointed not having a white Yuletide, and I'm quite certain snow will return.

There's no hurry, after all. Not this on this day, when everything feels good and magical and precious. Blessed Yule!

Easter Symbols, Indeed

We did it. We survived, maybe even thrived. Winter is done with, at least the vernal equinox says so. Yes, the landscape is still white, there's still inches and inches of ice on the pond and mud season is in full-swing. But winter itself is officially over.

Mud Season: The season that comes before Black Fly Season. #maine #farmlife

This winter was full of adjustments, growing pains, and truthfully, anxiety about how and if this transition to the farm is working out. But we kept planning, kept working, made lists, ordered seeds and trees, ordered chicks, and suddenly it is truly and actually spring. We feel as committed and passionate about our goals here, as ever, maybe more, after slugging through the highs and lows of the coldest season. Winter outside, here on the farm, is stunning. No complaints there, I'm still a fan of winter. Inside, with the house often in various stages of renovation, with two teens, an 80-year old, and two 40-somethings, one of which works from home full-time, well, it's no wonder we skidded across some black ice.

As we celebrated Easter, today, we had a heightened sense of rebirth and renewal. The colors seemed more saturated. The usually utilitarian kitchen felt pretty and even elegant. We ate deviled eggs and the cake the teens decided to make in the afternoon, and we listened to the March wind send slush crashing off the roof.

And we exhaled.

Blessed Easter! #secularpagan #vernalequinox #ostara

We were comforted in the rituals of Spring, in the abundant cheerfulness of our collected things, and in our gifts of sweetness to each other. Winter is good and done and Spring holds immense promise.

Relaxation : Yule : Day Twelve

Weather postponed our family gathering until tomorrow, so there's been a lot of this happening. #nintendo #wiiu

With our family gathering postponed until tomorrow due to snow, there was a lot of this happening, today. I'm hopeful we will begin the hardcore relaxing (and movie watching) in the next couple of days, but we're not ready to stop with the baking and hosting, just yet. Thank you for following along on these Twelve Days of Yule, friends! May you have a safe, joyful, and outstanding New Year! I'll see you in 2014!

home in here

Santa Eve

Today dawned cold and brilliant. The trees twinkled and chimed in the breeze. Our home had seemingly been set down inside a snow globe; everything had been turned into a blue-hued winter wonderland following the ice storm. Inside, loved ones bustled about, secretive and whispering. Animal-shaped cookies were decorated by old and young. Alex finished the daybed for the living room, in time for family and friends to gather. And those corners I so longed for, began to reflect all that live here.

We have so much to be grateful for. So much to be proud of, so much yet to do.

I can't say for sure what the next year will bring, but I do know that I will strive to hold this season in my heart all the year long. Merry, merry, friends. May your days be brilliant, joyous, and oh so full of love.

Life is full of sweet surprises
Everyday's a gift
The sun comes up and I can feel it lift my spirit
Fills me up with laughter, fills me up with song
I look into the eyes of love and know that I belong

Bless us all, who gather here
The loving family I hold dear
No place on earth, compares with home
And every path will bring me back from where I roam
Bless us all, that as we live
We always comfort and forgive
We have so much, that we can share
With those in need we see around us everywhere

Let us always love each other
Lead us to the light
Let us hear the voice of reason, singing in the night
Let us run from anger and catch us when we fall
Teach us in our dreams and please, yes please
Bless us one and all

Bless us all with playful years
With noisy games and joyful tears
We reach for You and we stand tall
And in our prayers and dreams
We ask You bless us all

We reach for You and we stand tall
And in our prayers and dreams we ask you
Bless us all

The Light Returns : Yule : Day Nine

Today's ice. #icestorm2013 #maine #waldocounty

In the five minutes that I was outside, the power went out. #icestorm2013 #maine #waldocounty

This is happening and the power is threatening to go out in this ice storm. Bake! Bake! Bake! (Also, meant to sew a curtain for sink...) #yuletide #unschooling

It's inconvenient and beautiful. #icestorm2013 #yuletide

Pretty spot in the den makes me happy. #icestorm2013 #home

Who needs a clean house, baked goods or wrapped gifts? #icestorm2013 #yuletide

The ice storm was with us still, today. As such, we gambled with our minutes and tried to work on tasks that require electricity, knowing full well that we might lose power at any moment. When it ultimately did happen, the teens still had one tray of cutouts in the oven and I was outside photographing the storm. I left a bright kitchen and returned to candles lit in the gloaming of the house at 330 in the afternoon. While the timing for a power outage is never convenient, one on the eve of Santa Eve is even less so. Ah, but many were in the same jam and it couldn't be helped, and the power outage required us to slow things down some, at the height of activity, so there's that, I suppose. So we ate thawing ice cream with the rest of the Solstice cake, some played cribbage, Olivia knitted and we talked. Alex went out once to find rope to help pull a stranger's car from a ditch. Six hours later, the power came back on. Six hours without power is not a hardship. We have the wood stove and plenty of wood, (although the water situation deserves a second look). We have candles (must get more candles), and we were safe and together.

Still. There's the baking, the wrapping. I admit, it was a relief when the light returned.

Ice Storm : Yule : Day Eight

The Solstice Cake we didn't get to yesterday is in the oven, all the laundry is caught up and I'll plan on an early dinner from the oven - all good things considering the ice that is accumulating outside. With luck, we won't lose power, but when I was last out, the wind was picking up, which is not promising. The trees swaying make an eerie sound - like clinking crystal, as the branches, coated in ice, knock against each other. If the ice builds up too much, we'll have downed branches and power lines. The wild turkeys, who seem annoyed and possibly sad, are huddling under the pines, and occasionally come out to scratch for food already layered with ice. They have my sympathy.

So as winter makes its claim out there, we'll be in here, snug, safe and busy with crafting and baking. If you are experiencing this ice storm, may you be safe and warm!
