Percy Shelley wrote, “O, wind, if winter comes, can spring be far behind?” So why not remind yourself of this during the darkest days and force some bulbs? Paperwhites are one of my most favorite things at Yule. I fill up many of my American Art Pottery pieces, old china bowls or silver bowls with marble chips and many Ziva paperwhite bulbs. For something so inexpensive and easy to do, they bring so much joy, scent and beauty to our season.
And of course, I'm reminded of our ancestor, the poet Anne Bradstreet who wrote,
If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.
