Just Like Mistletoe

Eighteen years ago we met in theater class at UMaine during the second week of class. I recognized your last name as that of one of my favorite poets, and then I found out she was your ancestor. I loved your energy and smile and long legs. You liked what I was reading before class and we flirted during improv and on the walk back to the dorms. You called me at 3 a.m. after fire drills at your dorm kept you from sleep. I barely knew you, we had hardly talked--but that was the best night of sleep, crammed in that lumpy dorm bed with you. And I felt that we had known each other always. That weekend we went to a movie and we walked until late on campus and you kissed me under a spider web, and yes, it was just like mistletoe. That was the best kiss. This is the best life. You are beside me still, after eighteen years, today, this, what feels like our real anniversary, the beginning of our life together. My love, may we keep finding spider webs to kiss and dream under.
